VOLUNTEER APPLICATION
From June 16th to 19th, 2010 the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada will be holding the first of seven national events in Winnipeg, Manitoba. To produce a world class event for all attending, the TRC needs your help in filling a number of volunteer positions.
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada has a mandate to learn the truth about what happened in the residential schools and to inform all Canadians about what happened in the schools.

TRC Chair Justice Murray Sinclair said “this event is a first for former Indian Residential School students, and a first for Canada. My fellow Commissioners and I have made a commitment to former students that we will hear from as many of them as we are logistically and humanly able to.”

The Commission hopes to guide and inspire First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples and Canadians in a process of truth and healing leading toward reconciliation and renewed relationships based on mutual understanding and respect.

The Commission views reconciliation as an ongoing individual and collective process that will require participation from all those affected by the residential school experience. This includes First Nations, Inuit, and Métis former students, their families, communities, religious groups, former Indian Residential School employees, government, and the people of Canada.

The Commission is looking for volunteers to join us in creating this historical event.

STATEMENT GATHERING AT THE NATIONAL EVENTThe Truth and Reconciliation Commission will be conducting statement gathering at the National Event. During statement gathering, survivors, their families, former staff, government oficials and others will have the opportunity to have their statement recorded and witnessed by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

The TRC is looking to secure approximately 50 volunteers to work specifically on the Statement Gathering aspect of the National Event. Those interested in volunteering for these positions will ideally be able to volunteer for at least two shifts across the four day period. Those ready to volunteer for statement gathering activity should be willing to demonstrate excellent inter-personal skills, a friendly and warm personality and be prepared to work in a potentially highly emotional environment. Volunteers should also be prepared to attend a specialized Statement Gathering training session prior to the event.

Some highly qualified individuals may be eligible to conduct actual statement gathering however the highly sensitive nature of statement gathering and the skill sets required for this work demands that only persons with proven ability in this area can be eligible to record statements. Most volunteer positions will involve supporting the various needs of the statement taking process and will not involve the recording of statements.
