Event: Aboriginal Neighbours Event- "Open Hearts, Clear Minds: A Road to Reconciliation"
Date: December 3-5, 2010

Description: An opportunity for Residential School Survivors to tell their truth about the experiences that have affected their lives; and for Non-Aboriginal people to hear and respond to these stories. The event will be an exploration of ways to build respect and understanding and find ways to reconciliation.

The event will feature two-and-a-half days of plenary sessions, listening circles, and discussion panels accompanied by visual materials and a feast on Saturday night.

Description: A Community Information Session on the Indian Residential School Settlement Agreement for interested survivors of the Residential School System. Members of the Independent Assessment Process (IAP) Secretariat, the Common Experience Payment Secretariat and Truth & Reconciliation Commission will present and answer any questions survivors have. A Regional Health Support Worker will also be discussing Health Canada’s Counseling Program with participants if they are interested.

TRC’s Participation: Commission representative, Viola Thomas, will provide an information session on the role of the TRC.

Event: McGill School of Social Work Lecture
Date: October 6, 2010


Description: Invited guests and the broader McGill, Aboriginal and Montreal community are welcome to a talk geared particularly to social workers regarding the relevance of the TRC process for hearings and/or the lessons for social work that arise from the evidence heard by the TRC. Will also be inviting members of other 'helping' professions as well as people from Kahnewake and Kahnesetake to attend.

TRC’s Participation: Commissioner Wilson will speak to issues above for 45-60 minutes and will take questions from audience members.

Event Highlights- Commissioner Marie Wilson spoke with students of McGill School of Social Work. Approximately 60 people attended the intimate discussion that focused on the TRC process of statement gathering and its implications for those involved in social work. Canadians will have the opportunity to see portions of the McGill discussion- the proceedings were filmed for an upcoming CBC-TV documentary.

Following the discussion, Commissioner Wilson spoke with the 2010 Sauvé Scholars (http://www.sauvescholars.org/en) about the TRC and its mandate.
