MEDIA AND THE PUBLIC INVITED TO WITNESS TRC NORTHERN NATIONAL EVENT

June 1, 2011, Ottawa – The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC) invites Canadians and members of the media to attend and witness its Northern National Event, from June 28 – July 1, 2011, in Inuvik, Northwest Territories.

National Events are a public, focal aspect of the TRC mandate intended to capture and expose the truth about Aboriginal children and families separated throughout Canada for more than 100 years, through the Residential School system.

“This is an opportunity for Canadians to come together – in person and through the media - to learn about this history, and to engage those citizens who have known so little about this chapter before, to try to understand each other in a new way,” said TRC Commissioner Marie Wilson.

The Opening Ceremony will take place on Monday June 28, 2011 at 9:30 a.m. and the Closing Ceremony will be held on Friday July 1, 2011 at 7:30 p.m. Portions of the Northern National Event will be made available for viewing through webcast service by logging onto www.trc.ca.

During the four day gathering, the courage and resilience of Residential School survivors and their families will be celebrated and shared from coast to coast to coast.  Canadians will witness never told, never heard perspectives of Residential Schools from Canada’s North.

TRC National Events will also help Canadians understand how we, as a country, can move beyond this past. Gestures, actions and intentions of reconciliation will be offered and demonstrated on behalf of governments, churches, corporations, communities, individuals and committed groups of citizens.

Creative programming in the form of sharing circles, stage performances, films, plays, youth programming and a learning tent will help to explain the history and legacy of Residential Schools.  All activities will take place in and around the Midnight Sun Complex and Jim Koe Park. Other event locations will be finalized and announced in the coming weeks.

See the Northern National Event agenda and program details posted as they become available at www.trc.ca
